my last adoption day
before i turn forty
i lived with my birth family
until i was three
&when i lived with them
i was called 선 or 'Sun'
my birth name
at nearly four
i 'hit that jackpot'
&arrived on Empire
&my adopted family renamed me
Tiffany
&my adopted family
calls my adoption day
'Tiffany Day'
I HATE 'TIFFANY DAY'
my adopted family
always made a big deal of it
but i just wanted to hide
the me i was
died that day
&nobody explained to me
why Sun had to die
in order for me to be Tiffany
&so
for me
'Tiffany Day' is an anniversary
of MY FIRST SELF'S DEATH
my korean self
not a fun celebration
not a party centering my tragedy
instead
it's a reminder that
whoever Sun was
she wasn't good enough
Sun was never invited
into her adopted parents home
Sun was never accepted
by her adopted family
Sun didn't matter
until She did
i decided
to bring Sun back to life
a little over two years ago
&it requires a lot of courage
to live as Sun
the person nobody wanted
the person who never mattered
but onward Sun Sails ...
